Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African- American civil rights activist. Ms. Parks was a 42-year-old worker in Montgomery, Alabama when she caught a bus on December 1, 1955. Shortly after she sat down, a white man got on the bus and had to stand. At that time, there were segregation laws which required African-Americans to make room for white passengers. Ms. Parks refused to comply with the bus driver’s demands for her to move.
